REVIEW
Infamous cannibal nasty which was banned in 31 different countries. Extremely violent and shocking stuff, which was filmed on location in the savage Amazon wilds of South America. Directed by Umberto Lenzi and starring our old mate John Morghen (Giovanni Lombardo Radice) and his co-star from House on the Edge of the Park, Lorraine De Selle.
The film kicks off in New York, where Mike (Morghen) rips off a drug gang and disappears. Meanwhile, Gloria is writing a thesis, and believes cannibalism is a myth, which had been invented by whites. To gain more knowledge, she sets off to the Amazon jungle, accompanied by her brother Rudy and her friend Pat.
When they arrive, they travel so far in a jeep until it gets stuck, then they proceed on foot. On their trek, they meet Mike and a guy called Joe, who is injured. They say they have been held captive by cannibals, but have escaped. A bit later, the group stumble across a deserted village, where Joe’s injuries deteriorate, and he dies. For some reason, Mike kills a young native girl after he has had sex with Pat. Cue the cannibals to return, and take them hostage.
Some pretty nasty scenes follow, as we see the cannibals chomping on Joe’s corpse and they kill Rudy. Mike is tied to a pole and has his meat-and-two-veg chopped off and his “stump” torched with a burning pole to stem the blood flow. As if this wasn’t enough for him, the cannibals decide to chop his arm off as well for good luck! Later in the film, he has the top of his head chopped off, like cutting the top off a boiled egg, and Pat ends up being strung up, with a hook through each of her breasts.
In a fitting ending, Gloria manages to escape and completes her thesis on cannibalism. She is presented with a PhD 3 months later for her work. I wonder why this one was banned? Seriously, as well as the harrowing torture scenes and barbaric killings, as with all cannibal flicks, there are also the usual few scenes chucked in there, depicting animals being killed for no apparent reason.
