REVIEW
Notorious zombie flick from our old mate Lucio Fulci, of House by the Cemetery, The Beyond and New York Ripper fame. Released in 1979 on the Vipco label.
We kick off the film as a fat zombie is found on board a boat in the waters off New York’s coast. The boat is actually owned by a famous scientist. Peter West, a journalist, travels to the Antilles Islands accompanied by the scientist’s daughter. Together, they go to find the scientist.
When they arrive at the islands, they discover that the girl’s father has died of a mysterious disease, and that this disease has spread over the island, turning the inhabitants into flesh eating zombies. This film contains some superb make-up and special effects, as well as some bizarre scenes, such as an underwater scenario, where a zombie fights with a shark, and sinks its teeth into the shark – rather than the other way around!
One of the most infamous scenes is when a woman is trapped in a wooden hut surrounded by zombies. As the zombies shatter the wood with their arms reaching out for her throat, a large pointed piece of wood moves menacingly towards her eye, as she cannot move. The spike eventually pierces her eyeball in one of the most cringing scenes I have seen.
Overall, a very well executed zombie film, which has
never been bettered. The make-up and special effects are spot on, and the
banned version contains some cringe-worthy scenes, such as the eyeball take.
