Near Dark was released into theatres in early
October 1987 by the DeLaurentiis Entertainment Group but it wasn't until it
was released onto video by HBO home video that it achieved its reputation.
The film stars Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen and Jenette Goldstein who also
stared in James Cameron`s superb sci-fi flick Aliens one year prior to Near
Dark.
The story behind the movie is very good which I think adds
to its success and makes it different to any other vampire flick. A young
man, Caleb, meets up with a beautiful young girl whilst out and about one
night. She is a vampire and gives him a nip on the neck instead of killing
him turning him into a vampire and forcing him to join the gang of vampires
she knocks about with.
The gang don`t want to accept him at first because he won`t
kill to survive and keeps feeding of the young girls blood. Meanwhile Caleb`s
dad and sister are out and about looking for him. Eventually his dad and sister
manages to find him and take him back home where his dad gives him a blood
transfusion returning him back to normal.
The film`s soundtrack is very moody and the film flows along
in the same style giving the viewer a felling of depth and creating a more
meaningfull vampire film. Along with The Lost Boys, Near Dark is one of the
Best Vampire flicks of the 80`s and still has allot of appeal. You can get
the 2 disc dvd edition from most major outlets which has been re mastered
and released by Anchor Bay Entertainment. The packaging is excellent and if
you buy it from MVC it comes with a free poster.
